Last week here at Pappy’s PlayBook we finished 6-1 +$2,500 overall in MLB picks. And to kick off the new week we decided to give out today’s pick for free!
The official pick:
Houston Astros Team Total Over 4.5 Runs (To win $500)
Game: Houston Astros at Los Angeles Angels
Pick: Astros Team Total Over 4.5 Runs
Grade: 5*
Playable to: -135
Why We Like the Astros Team Total Over
The cleanest way to attack this game is not necessarily the full-game over or the Astros moneyline.
The best angle is isolating Houston’s offense.
That is why we are playing the Astros Team Total Over 4.5 runs.
DraftKings Network also listed Astros Team Total Over 4.5 as its best team-total play for today, pointing directly to Houston’s matchup against Grayson Rodriguez and his fastball-heavy approach. Their breakdown notes that Rodriguez has struggled badly this season and that Houston matches up well against the pitch profile he leans on most.
That is the key to this bet. We are not asking both offenses to score. We are not asking the Angels to help us. We are not asking Houston to win the game.
We are asking one offense, in a strong matchup, to get to five runs.
The Grayson Rodriguez Fade
The matchup starts with Rodriguez.
This is a pitcher we can attack because the current form has been poor. DraftKings Network’s writeup cited Rodriguez allowing 20 runs, 19 earned, on 23 hits with 11 walks in 18 innings, along with a 9.50 ERA, 7.08 xERA, and 5.94 FIP. That gives Houston multiple ways to score: hard contact, walks, traffic, and early count damage.
TalkSport is also on the same Astros team-total angle, recommending Astros Team Total Over 4.5 and citing Rodriguez’s high ERA and WHIP as part of the handicap. It also pointed toward Rodriguez Under 16.5 outs, which matters because an early exit would push Houston into the Angels bullpen sooner. (Talksport)
That is exactly what we want in a team total over.
A team total over should not rely on one perfect path. It needs multiple scoring routes. Houston can get there by tagging Rodriguez early, forcing walks, creating traffic, or getting into the bullpen before the game settles.
The Bullpen Path Matters
This is not just a starter fade.
That is important.
A team total over becomes much stronger when there is a second scoring path behind the starter. RotoWire’s betting breakdown also listed Astros Team Total Over 4.5 at -120 and highlighted the Angels bullpen as a major part of the case, noting that the bullpen owns a 4.96 ERA and 1.51 WHIP.
That gives Houston a backup plan.
Even if Rodriguez survives the first few innings, the Astros do not need to do all the work immediately. They can get to two or three runs early, pressure the pitch count, and still finish the ticket late against a vulnerable bullpen.
That is the difference between a lazy starter fade and a real team-total handicap.
Why This Is the Right Market
The full-game over is tempting, but it adds more chaos.
The Astros moneyline is playable in theory, but then we have to trust Houston’s pitching and bullpen. That is not the cleanest edge.
The team total keeps us focused on the best part of the game: Houston’s offense against a struggling starter and a vulnerable bullpen.
That is market selection.
Our MLB betting framework starts with PASS as the default and forces every play to survive the full scan before release. It also requires team totals to prove they have conversion paths, lineup support, bullpen path, price discipline, and a realistic loss-script review — not just a “bad starter, bet over” shortcut.
This pick checked enough boxes to make the free card.
What Could Go Wrong
The main risk is conversion.
Houston can get traffic and still strand runners. Rodriguez can walk a tightrope for four or five innings. The Astros lineup can hit the ball hard but fail to cash runners in scoring position. That is always the danger with team totals.
There is also one matchup caution: Houston is expected to be right-handed heavy, and some market analysis has noted Rodriguez has been more competitive against right-handed bats than left-handed bats. That keeps this as a 5-Star release, not a 10-Star or 20-Star.
But the overall win case is stronger than the loss script.
Rodriguez’s current form is poor. Houston has enough bats to create pressure. The Angels bullpen gives us late scoring support. The market number is still playable at 4.5.
That is enough to fire.
